In The Message bible, Eugene Peterson gives this translation of this verse: “take a good look, friends, at who you were when you were called into this life…” God’s calling on your life had nothing to do with who and what you were, but He called you in spite of who you were. Take a good look at who you were when God called you into His service, and never, never forget all that He has formed you to be. In spite of how far away from Him you were, in spite of the sins you were guilty of, in spite of your rejection of His love, He pursued you, and fought for you, and finally rescued your soul from the pit it was destined to. The Psalmist, David, reflects in Psalm 40, verse 2 “He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set my feet upon a rock.” |
